TRUE NORTH WINDS
![]() True North Winds is a new performance ensemble out of Southern Alberta combining the talents of classically trained clarinetist, Amanda Kinnear, and jazz baritone saxophonist, Sarah Matheson-Nadeau.
Sarah and Amanda met in 2012 and immediately bonded over their shared passion for music, performing and Doctor Who. Between the two performers, they have mastered the art of eight total wind instruments including Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Alto, Tenor and Baritone saxophones. Amanda grew up in Port Moody, BC and studied classical clarinet performance at the University of Victoria in Victoria, BC. She completed her degree with Distinction in April of 2010 and has since moved to Calgary, Alberta where she works as a freelance performer and music educator. Amanda has performed with several ensembles around western Canada including the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, Trio Vivo, Quintet Vivo, the Christmas Tree-O, the UVic Orchestra, UVic Chorus, UVic Wind Symphony, Alberta Winds, as well as Canadian premiere performances with the Victoria Clarinet Choir. Amanda has also performed internationally, most recently at the Belgium Clarinet Academy in 2011. Along with clarinet, Amanda also plays the bass clarinet, and alto and tenor saxophones. A native Calgarian, Sarah began her studies in jazz under Alberta saxophone legend Jim Brenan. Following the completion of Mount Royal University’s Jazz Performance Diploma in 2007, Sarah completed her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at New Jersey’s Rutgers University in 2009, under the instruction of master saxophonist Ralph Bowen. Sarah performs regularly in Calgary and Edmonton with ensembles including The Calgary Creative Arts Ensemble, The Mount Royal Chamber Flutes, The Calgary Jazz Orchestra, The Runaway Five, Calgary metal band AfterEarth, The Calgary Zoo Island Orchestra, The Saxophone Coalition, The Prime Time Big Band and various other combos, performing at venues including The Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club, The National Music Centre, The Arden Theatre, The Ironwood Stage, and New York’s Blue Note Jazz Club with the Rutgers University Jazz Ensemble. Sarah has also completed an MA in Music Psychology through the University of Sheffield, in Sheffield, UK. Along with baritone saxophone, Sarah also plays flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and bass guitar. True North Winds specializes in classical and jazz duos of Flute & Clarinet, Clarinet & Bass Clarinet and Alto & Baritone Saxophones.
